Antigone, which is a part of the Three Theban Plays, is a tragedy written by Sophocles, the ancient Greek playwright, sometime in or before 441 BCE. Abbas Abolhasani used the Persian translation to bring Antigone to the amphitheatre of the ministry of culture of Babolsar township in 2011.
Synopsis of Antigone
In a civil war in the city of Thebes, two brothers Eteocles and Polynices fight each other to death. Creon the rulers of the city decides that Eteocles be sanctified and buried with honour while Polynices’s body should be left untouched on the battleground to be devoured by vultures and worms _the highest punishment according to the Theban culture. Antigone, the sister of the dead, stands against the decision of the king and decides to give Polynices a respectful burial. Antigone’s defiance stirs a series of unexpected incidents…
